Home of the Infantry Regiments of Berkshire and Wiltshire

The Collection

Features over 65,000 fascinating objects.

Whilst the museum is situated in Salisbury, Wiltshire the collection is of interest around the world. We currently hold over 65,000 objects in the Collection, recorded on a database with the large majority having been digitally photographed so that one is able to view most items via the web site.

For a variety of reasons many people cannot visit the museum to view objects; so in putting most of the Collection on our site we have sought both to provide greater access and to increase awareness.

If your search for information on an ancestor has not been successful within The Collection, try our Soldier Search facility.

ORDERING IMAGES

If you wish to purchase a digital image from our collection, enlarge the relevant image and follow the instructions. The copy you see will have watermarks across it but these will not appear on the copy sent to you. You will be given the option of having the image sent to you on a CD Rom or as an attachment to an E-Mail.

Delivery by CD Rom is a little more expensive to cover the cost of post and packaging. You should be aware that some of the images which the Museum has acquired over time, are very small, some are even passport size or less; therefore no guarantee can be provided that they can be enlarged with out losing quality of image.

TIPS & HINTS ON USING THE SEARCH FACILITY

Category and Unit are both two level search filters. In both cases, use the left hand box first and then refine your choice by using the right hand box. If, in error, you go straight to the right hand box, you will get an extremely long list to choose from.

When searching on Unit in its left hand box ........

49th, 62nd, 66th or 99th = That numbered Regiment of Foot
Berks = Berkshire and Royal Berkshire Regiment Units
Wilts = All the Wiltshire Regiment units
DERR = Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment
RGBW = Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment
Wessex = Wessex Regiments
Riflles = The Rifles
Unknown = Unit is unknown or no unit relates to the object
Other = Any units not listed above

Within the search parameters in Unit other non regimental units may be shown. They are listed because there is some form of county or regimental connection.

If you know the record number of the item you seek, you can access it directly by entering it into the Keyword box and ensuring that all the other boxes are set to blank or the word Any before you click on Search.

If your Name search draws a blank, try it again in the Keywords search facility.

If, when looking through the Collection, you discover an error or omission, please contact the museum so that the matter can be rectified.
